Saturation Index vs. Recovery

How to read the graph

SI < 0: undersaturated for the evaluated mineral; this does not exclude other fouling mechanisms.
SI = 0: equilibrium.
SI > 0: supersaturated; precipitation is thermodynamically possible.

Mineral SI = log₁₀(IAP/Ksp). Silica uses log₁₀(concentration / estimated solubility). Deposition also depends on kinetics, pH, temperature, residence time and treatment.

The selected pH treatment is retained throughout the sweep. Concentration factor and concentrate pH are recalculated at each recovery. Hover over a marker for its value.

Mineral-specific notes

Calcite / aragonite: calcium carbonate phases.
Gypsum / anhydrite: calcium sulfate phases.
Barite / celestite: barium / strontium sulfate.
Strontianite: strontium carbonate.
Silica: amorphous silica screening baseline.
Siderite*: unavailable without dissolved Fe(II) speciation.
Brucite: magnesium hydroxide.

Davies activities and selected sulfate ion pairs are used with published temperature-dependent phase constants. This is a reduced screen, not full speciation. Brucite has only a 25 °C datum; siderite requires Fe(II), which is not entered. Fluorite uses calcium and fluoride. Silica lacks high-pH/salinity correction. Ferric hydroxide, metal silicates and phosphates lack the required speciation inputs.
