Summer is coming, are your cooling systems ready for summer?
Summer is coming, are your cooling systems ready for summer?
Undoubtedly, we are preparing pumps, compressors, cooling tower components and all equipment for summer, but are we also ready for scaling, corrosion and bacterial contamination that may be caused by circulating water in the system?
As we have stated in our trainings and shares, if a correct conditioning programme is not followed, we may face the risk of scaling risks, especially in equipment where water circulates and heat transfer is critical. On the other hand, we see that spring and summer seasons are passing under heavier conditions day by day with the negative impact of global climate change. Are we able to properly treat and purify the make-up water we add to replace the water lost through evaporation? Most importantly, can we effectively protect our equipment against bacteria, algae and similar organic activities in hot and humid weather?
– Heat transfer losses caused by crusting can negatively affect your sustainability in production.
– Under-deposit corrosion developing under the scaling can stop you unexpectedly.
– The metals lost by corrosion are irreversible and unfortunately, it is not possible to continue without stopping and intervening.
– Do you know that the biofilm formed by bacterial growth loses more heat transfer in your heat exchangers than many encrustations?
Corrosion, encrustation and bacterial fouling can lead to interruptions in production, unexpected downtime and loss of earnings.
What should be done in this case?
– You should continuously check corrosion rates with online or mass loss methods and choose a treatment programme suitable for the type of corrosion experienced.
– You should closely monitor your intermittent or continuous biocide programmes to avoid bacterial contamination. ATP monitoring dip slide applications must be done. If you are using oxidising biocide, ORP control or manual oxidant balance should be kept under control. Otherwise, your system may suddenly face the risk of pollution.
– In order to prevent the formation of deposits, saturation indices should be constantly monitored, conductivity and dissolved solids ‘specific to your system’ should be kept under constant control. Bluff and make-up balance
is vital for cooling.
