Industrial Water Treatment Systems

REVERSE OSMOSIS SYSTEMS

Reverse osmosis is a water treatment method in which water is pressurized through a semipermeable membrane to remove unwanted contaminants such as dissolved salts, heavy metals, organics and microorganisms. This method, which works in reverse to the natural osmosis process, allows pure water to pass through the membrane by applying a pressure against the concentration difference of the solutes in the water, while the pollutants are retained on one side of the membrane. Since reverse osmosis has the capacity to purify water at a high level, it is used in many areas from drinking water production to industrial water preparation. It is especially effective in making seawater or salt water potable.

Reverse osmosis systems are characterized by low energy consumption, high efficiency and the capacity to remove a wide range of contaminants. In industrial applications, they are widely preferred to provide pure water in areas such as boiler feed water, pharmaceutical production, food and beverage industry. However, it is important to pre-treat the water for the system to work effectively; otherwise the membranes can quickly become clogged or damaged. Because reverse osmosis significantly changes the chemical makeup of the water, minerals may need to be added back into the treated water. With these features, reverse osmosis is recognized as one of the most effective methods of modern water treatment technologies, both to meet the need for high quality water and to support environmental sustainability.
